COMPUTER SCIENCE
Computer Science is a two-year elective course spanning Forms 3 and 4. In addition to preparing students for computer science courses at the tertiary level, the course aims to teach students how to solve problems like a programmer, decomposing complex tasks into executable steps. The course begins by discussing the interdisciplinary applications of computer science, emphasizing that computer processing is based on human design and input. Afterward, students learn basic search, sort, and network modeling algorithms; they are particularly encouraged to recognize the applications of these algorithms to topics relevant to their daily lives such as business, transportation, and infrastructure. Then, this course introduces the programming concepts of primitive data types, data storage, expressions, conditionals, loops, modular programming, and arrays. During these units, students gain hands-on programming experience through collaborative programming exercises. The course concludes with robotics unit during which students apply their knowledge to fun, hands-on activities.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
ICT is a core class spanning Form 1 and Form 2. The curriculum begins with an introduction to ICT including its basic concepts and terminology. Within this course the impact and usefulness of ICT is explored as well as the potential career opportunities within tech. Students are introduced to computers, the safety and security of the user and the computer, responsible use of the computer, the hardware of the computer, and the process of changing data into information. Students can practice their typing through the use of the Mavis Beacon Teaching Typing software. Through this course, students will be equipped with basic and relevant office tools to prep them for the working world. These include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Students are enlightened on the Internet and its uses, and how it is explored for web communication and for extensive research or downloading of files. Web presence, its importance and impact on the society, education and businesses today, are deliberated on as students are guided to create their own web presence through developing social media accounts and creating a website of their own.
